I am a sponsor of a child in the AIDS-stricken village of Dunga, Kenya, and I am asking you to consider taking the same step. Many of us contribute to large, established organizations, but the experience of being a child’s sponsor is profound. I know ‘my’ child. I know that 90% of my support is used to benefit her directly. This small effort is making all the difference in one child’s life.
The child I sponsor, Auma, was found passed out in the sun, sick with malaria. At eight years old, she had lost both parents to disease. Each week, someone in the village is lost to malaria or the effects of AIDS, often leaving children behind. There is a tradition in the Luo tribe that when you are old enough to be a mother or a father, you become a mother and a father to all the children of the tribe, taking in children in need. Unfortunately, when resources are scarce, and death delivers orphans often, it is difficult to practice this tradition. There are children in need of your help. There are now over 1,600 orphans in the village. Many are physically or sexually abused by those they live with. Many sleep in the open air and receive one meal a day at the community school. One of the early successes of the Dunga Orphanage Project was to start a self-sufficient feeding program for the school, by providing financial support to farmers in exchange for a portion of their crops.
The Dunga Orphanage Project has the unique mission to help young girls and boys in the community by providing close emotional, spiritual, educational and medical help. In the strongly patriarchal society of Kenya, girls are the primary victims of abuse and disease. Orphan girls are commonly abandoned, used like slaves, or become additional wives while they are still children. Young boys without support often end up on the streets of Kisumu, in order to survive some of them resort to petty crimes while others prostitute themselves. Some men force their wives to trade sex for food. The increase in sex partners continues the cycle of death, orphans, poverty, and abuse.
The Dunga Orphanage is essentially a large family focused on improving the
lives of children in order to help them remain outside of this cycle. As a sponsor, you give one young girl or boy a healthy, safe future.
With the support of U.S. donors and the Dunga community, a home, classroom and food garden was built to care for over 30 abandoned young girls and boys; with plans to grow should more sponsors arise.
The founder of the Project, Sarah O’Brien, came to Kenya to help at the village school. The experience so moved her that she returned the following year with the dedication to bring relief to the children of Dunga. With the skillful guidance from God and gracious supporters, the project blossomed. Buildings were built, a garden and farming project started, and the Project took over the feeding program at the school. The orphanage became home to over 30 boys and girls, who have bonded to form a loving family. The children are grateful for the support, and enjoy finding projects of their own to give to others in need.
Our sponsorship program allows for each sponsor to have a relationship with the child they support. You will receive a photo of ‘your child’, drawings or letters from him/her, and reports on their progress. As a small nonprofit, you can be sure that your contribution goes directly to the care of the children; not 30-60% as with larger organizations.
For as little as $60 a month, you can make all the difference in one child’s life.
Your support of a child provides their food, shelter, clothing, medical and educational needs, and you become part of his or her loving family.
Please consider sponsoring a child or making a contribution. Your help makes a real difference in a child’s future.
